Places to Visit

There are plenty of easily accessible attractions for adults and older children to enjoy.

Baslow village, with Goose Green at its centre, has many unusual and picturesque features. The 17th Century triple-arched river bridge, guarded by a distinctively small toll house, is worth seeing. There’s the magnificent Chatsworth House and Gardens, home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, which holds regular events throughout the year. The quaint Edensor Tea Cottage just nearby is a delightful pitstop after a visit to the historic estate.

Close by is Bakewell, home of the famous Bakewell pudding, still made locally to an old and secret recipe! For a different experience, head to Castleton and the world famous Blue John Cavern. Take a trip deep underground into the huge cave system with magnificent stalagmites and stalactites. A little further afield is Matlock Bath,  famous for its spa waters since the 17th Century. With the cable car ride and the Heights of Abraham, it makes for a lovely day trip from Hall Cottage.

Eating & Drinking

There are many and varied places to eat in and around Baslow. The cosy Prince of Wales pub and restaurant is a favourite - superb food, excellent service and only a short walk down the hill from the cottage. For more traditional ‘pub grub’, head to the Devonshire Arms or the Wheatsheaf. As many visitors come to Hall Cottage to celebrate a special occasion, Fischer’s at Baslow Hall is just a 5 minute drive away. An award-winning restaurant and fine dining experience not to be missed. A little closer, just a ten minute walk away, is Il Lupo’s, a family run authentic Italian restaurant. Cafe’s and tea rooms abound. Try The Cafe on the Green or Contadino Atleta (Vegan Cafe) in Baslow itself, or Edensor Tea Cottage and the Estate Farm Shop Cafe.

Walks, Rides & Wildlife

Explore the stunning Peak District landscapes throughout the year, from dramatic edges to serene reservoirs, viaducts and varied wildlife. The exhilarating Baslow, White and Curbar Edges are within walking distance of Hall Cottage. Hope Valley and the pretty village of Hathersage are only 6.5 miles away and boast some areas of outstanding natural beauty. Mam Tor and The Great Ridge Walk are a little challenging, but offer some of the most spectacular scenery in the Peak District.  A range of walking books and maps are available at the cottage for you to use during your stay.
