Rainy Day Activities in the Peak District You’ll Love

May 29, 2024

“The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain” Dolly Parton

As much as we all dream of discovering that elusive pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, I reckon after enduring one of the soggiest years on record, many of us would gladly trade that rainbow for a stretch of clear skies. But don’t worry, because even in the rain the Peak District remains a treasure trove of delights waiting to be discovered.

So, while you may still find yourself reaching for your trusty wet weather gear, don’t allow a little rain to dampen your spirits. Instead, read on to discover some of our favourite wet-weather activities in the Peak District.

1. Grandeur Amidst the Showers

Rainy days are perfect for exploring some of the magnificent stately homes in the Peak District. With Chatsworth House just a walk away from the cottage, you’ll have plenty of time to experience its splendour, with stunning interiors and priceless art collections.

Discover 5 Surprising and Little-Known Facts about Chatsworth House in our blog.

Alternatively, hop in your car and enjoy stepping back in time at the romantic retreat of Haddon Hall, one of the oldest houses in the country. If the rain pauses for a moment – don’t miss the beautiful Elizabethan Walled Gardens.

With time on your hands, why not venture further afield to the majestic Hardwick Hall, once owned by Bess of Hardwick and now owned by the National Trust.

2. Rainy Day Caving Adventures

Go underground…..if you dare! I know this isn’t to everyone’s taste, including mine, but if you like a bit of caving, then the Peak District has it all. I have to admit, if you can forget where you are, you will be awed by their beauty and splendour, and they offer the perfect protection from the rain!

Head to Buxton and explore Poole’s Cavern – huge limestone caves with magnificent crystal stalactites. There’s a café and a shop here, selling mineral samples and jewellery, and other Peak District products.

For a different experience choose Castleton, home to the rare mineral called Blue John at Treak Cliff Cavern or Blue John Cavern.

If you fancy exploring the caverns by boat – and let’s face it, who wouldn’t – then pop along to Speedwell Cavern.

Finally, you won’t want to miss the Devil’s Arse, known as Peak Cavern, and learn about the last cave dwellers in the UK, who lived there until 1915.

3. Back In Time on the Trains

Discover the magic of a nostalgic train journey. Explore the Derwent Valley and enjoy a delicious afternoon tea at the same time! Peak Rail offers experiences aboard heritage steam and diesel trains running between Rowsley and Matlock.
The stations on the 19th Century line are all beautifully preserved, and the surrounding countryside is stunning (even in the rain!).

The Crich Tramway Village, just outside the Peak District National Park, is another great place to spend a rainy day. You’ll find the National Tramway Museum here, with 60 vintage trams, a period village scene with pubs and shops, and you can even ride the trams and admire the countryside from a dry carriage!

4. Outdoor Fun in the Rain

Dare I suggest it? Embrace the great outdoors anyway! With proper preparation (check out our blog here for top tips), there are plenty of wonderful places to explore even on a rainy day. One of my personal favourites is Padley Gorge, recognised as a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its rich wildlife and plant diversity. With woodlands and waterfalls to admire, it’s a haven for nature lovers. And fear not – access and parking are straightforward, making it the ideal spot for a rainy day stroll. Just mind your step on those paths – they can get a bit slippery!

So, never let it be said that rain stopped play in the Peak District! From exploring magnificent stately homes to delving underground in awe-inspiring caves, enjoying nostalgic train journeys, or embracing the great outdoors, there are plenty of fascinating and exciting places to visit on a wet and rainy day.

If you’re staying at Hall Cottage in Baslow, all these adventures are within a 30-minute drive, with some much closer. Plus, with plenty of charming pit stops and hidden gems to discover along the way, boredom is simply not an option!

So, enjoy the rain and the rainbows that follow! If you’re looking to escape into the beautiful Peak District and recharge your batteries, Hall Cottage offers the perfect stay. Book your break today and let the adventures begin!
